Small businesses are an essential part of New York City’s economy, according to every report issued since the onset of COVID-19. Before the pandemic began, New York City boasted over 200,000 small businesses, employing more than 3 million people and accounting for more than half of private sector jobs in New York City.

Globally recognized and historically prominent, Harlem’s rich cultural legacy has positioned the neighborhood as a dining, lifestyle, and entertainment hub unlike any other in New York City. Central Harlem’s organic borders include the Harlem River to the north, Central Park to the south, the Fordham Cliffs to the west, and Fifth Avenue to the east.

Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) has partnered with Harlem’s 125th Street Business Improvement District (BID) through a graduate capstone course to publish economic and community development recommendations for a two-block area of West 125th Street from Broadway to Morningside Avenue.
