More than 9.4 million businesses are owned by women in the United States. According to the National Association of Women Business Owners, these enterprises employ around 7.9 million people and generate $1.5 trillion in sales as of 2015. This month Star Network will be honoring some of the most prominent female leaders in Brooklyn at their Sixth Annual Power Women in Business Awards and Networking Dinner.

“There is so much talent and there are so many successful businesswomen who give back to the community,” Event Organizer Lori Pedone said in a statement to Brooklyn Reporter.

This year’s event, which is scheduled for March 23, will include a networking cocktail hour, and following welcoming remarks from the organizers, dinner and the award presentations. The 2017 Hall of Fame Inductees are MJ Pedone, president of Indra Public Relations, and Renee Dorsa, owner of Dorsa Group Realty.

The recipients work in a wide variety of fields. Amarimba L. Charles, for example, is the founder of T.A.L.L.O.M., a non-profit organization working with at-risk youth and the underprivileged communities where they live. Dr. Susan Hernandez of Pearly Whites Pediatric Dentistry is being honored for her work as a dentist serving the 48% of the population that wants to improve their smile. Also in the medical field, Katherine Melzer Ross of GENESIS Fertility and Reproductive Medicine will be honored for the important work she performs helping women become mothers.

“There are excellent women in our community and my role is to recognize them,” Home Reporter and Brooklyn Spectator Co-Publisher Victoria Schneps, an event organizer, said in a statement to Brooklyn Reporter. “They deserve to be highlighted for all their dedication and devotion to what they do.”
